“That’ll do it.” Laine flipped his leather wallet open. Damn! This wasn’t his undercover wallet. A shiny piece of gold slipped from under his real credit cards and ID. He pushed his shield further inside. What in the world was he doing with this real identification on him? He knew better! The department worked hard preparing his credentials for his undercover persona. This was a rookie mistake. The same fatal slip the rookie he'd assigned with Russell had made. Where were his brains? In his pants? He had to focus, to forget this curvy woman whose hips he watched sashay up the aisles all day long. Pay for the book, impart a small amount of police advice, and get out.

“How long have you been working at Burger Train?” Her melodious voice distracted him.

“About three weeks. Got promoted from the Oakland store. Yep. I’m the assistant manager now.” Laine's face was hot. His fingers had a hard time separating the few bills. His mind was on the soft lilt of the clerk's voice. A sweet fire filled his loose fitting uniform pants. The pressure was pleasant and gave him stronger thoughts. The pleated pants wouldn’t be loose much longer.

“By the way, the name's Laine Tanizaki.”

“Corie Rickman. Glad to meet you.” She extended a small hand across the counter and he took it gently. The warmth and tingle passing between their palms was unmistakable and they broke the handshake quickly. “I kinda like `Sir Galahad.’”

You volunteering to be the fair Princess? The soft, milk chocolate of her satiny looking skin darkened with a flush.

Corie's slim fingers flew over the keyboard with delicate precision as she deftly entered the numbers in the computer. What sensual damage could they do if they were to walk over his body? All too quickly he paid and with no other excuse to remain, was forced to leave the store to return to the monotony of his world. Undercover narcotic work was ninety-eight per cent boredom, two per cent excitement. Excitement that often translated to death.
